Want your own portal?
So far, after many years, this website is purely for my teaching and editing, which is how I've preferred to keep it unless I meet other teachers I feel completely confident in after thorough vetting. The option is there however for people interested in working with OWA. Contact me to discuss.
Much is required of being a teacher with Tantra Bensko's OWA and the standards are high. I must be able to let students know you are stable, kind, a good listener, able to work with a variety of student's styles, have positive relations in social media, etc.
I'd expect you to inspire students, and for them to give me glowing feedback about your work in the evaluation. References, resume, meeting in person or Skype, and an extended period of interaction are important for me to feel confident in engaging new members of this academy. I would help you chose and learn how to use the best teaching technology, work with you to perfect your class, provide a way for students to pay using credit cards, advertise your work, introduce your teaching to social media, writing blogs, newsletters, etc., provide student quotes about your teaching with OWA, include an interview for potential students to see, and be able to provide references for you for other jobs based on experience. You'd have a place in this site that I pay for and create for you, I'd and would update as often as needed, such as free tips, essays, links, descriptions of classes, excerpts from your writing, etc..
A degree is not required. Prior teaching experience is not required, though both are excellent if you have them. Social media history is important for me to look at before taking you on. People with disabilities are encouraged, as teaching online might be one of the few options open to such. People who join in early have an advantage, as each teacher, including myself, carves out a niche and claims future class topics that the next instructor should not teach here, to avoid overlap.
Age is not important. Being respectful, balanced, and enthusiastic is. A history of drama, conflict, break-downs and mental or emotional instability, chauvinism, over-indulgence in substances, rudeness, and so forth would not work for being taken on as a teacher here. However, if you have had such challenges in the past but are ready to move on, you might be able to offer non-interactive classes at first. (That doesn't imply anything about any non-interactive classes, as there are many reasons to teach them that way.) Being personable, organized, punctual, with great teaching ideas, understanding of the mechanics of writing, inventive methods, an ability to attract students to classes and great writing would all be excellent qualities to bring to your application.
You would set your price per class, the timing and length and methods of delivery, number of students allowed, and I would coach you on all of those, and be a test subject, proofing your material. I would not be your employer. You would be independent contractor with the students. My percentage would be significantly less than the amount taken by universities and other online programs.
Having this job when applying other places, and having references from me as you look elsewhere could be helpful to teachers hoping to be hired at other programs. You would not be expected to teach here any longer than you wished, as long as you finished out with the students you contracted with. You could have the classes available but chose your timing when you were willing to teach. It would be up to you to accept the students or not, depending on if you felt confident you would be the best option for them to learn from. Genuine interest and joy in teaching, not just making money, is a must.
While you probably wouldn't have as many students as Instructors do at a university, you would be able to keep a much higher percentage of profits, have more control over your methods, be allowed to give your students breaks with they needed to attend to other things or postpone classes if necessary to fit students' unforeseen events, develop ongoing relationships with them that don't belong to the institutions, teach what you want as often as you want. You could start when you wanted rather than go by quarters, could make the classes the length you want, cap the student numbers as you wish, not need to make syllabus etc according to Institutionalized formats. OWA has been around for many years so is in search engines, has a positive reputation from always happy students and clients around the world, has lots of advertising through means such as my constant new publications' bios and a variety of websites, as well as paid ads.
As a teacher became active, the advertisement would become more aggressive. The footer would also be changed to make it an egalatarian website. You would not ever be expected to pay anything, and my time, advertising costs, and reputation, plus having your work hosted on the eighty dollar a year Weebly Pro website would be reimbursed only through the percentage taken from your classes. If your class never has a student, that's a loss I'm willing to take. Ideally you are well published, with an established readership, in the genre/s you want to teach and you will get the word out widely about your classes to potential students. This doesn't necessarily mean your work is in top tier Literary magazines, or a best seller, as there are other literary preferences just as wonderful. The more students are able to show you're the specific person they resonate with, the better your chances are of succeeding, and reimbursing me for my extensive time with the application process, creation of your classes and website portal, billing, references, etc.. Demonstrating those tangible assets when applying is useful. You may suggest a class not on the list below, and it can be specialized and unique in concept.
